It’s ok to let yourself to take a break if you need one

A great way to take time for yourself is to go on a walk outside and enjoy nature.

Life is hard. There is no point in sugar coating it. Life can truly suck sometimes.

Which is why it is important to take time for yourself. Society has placed a stigma around taking time for yourself: you’re supposed to work all day, come home, and do more work. You’re supposed to keep working as if you’re a machine. And machines don’t take breaks.

But that is just unrealistic. I am 18 years old and have suffered from depression and anxiety and stress for so long that while I am not a full fledged adult, I have had to grow up fast enough to pass as one.

I am at that weird age where I am legally an adult and expected to make adult decisions and do adult things, but I am still treated like a child. I have been through things that have caused me to act older than I am for a long time, and I get comments from adults about how mature I am.

I’ve always gotten comments from adults about how mature I am. But I don’t want to be mature. I have to be because that is what is expected of me, but people need to stop acting like it is a choice. I was forced to grow up faster than I should have. I didn’t get to experience the childhood so many others have gotten to or the childhood my parents got to.

I didn’t take enough time for myself.

I mostly blame it on the school system because they put so much pressure on kids to be good at school. Schools start preparing us for the next chapter before we even finish the one we are in. In elementary school, it was all about preparing us for middle school; in middle school, it was about preparing us for high school; and in high school, it’s about preparing us for the “real world”. 

I didn’t have to listen, but I did, and I stressed myself out. I didn’t let myself be a kid because it wasn’t something I thought I was expected to be. 

So I give myself breaks. I give myself mental health days. I give myself the time to relax and not have to focus on school or anything else. And, for some people, it is important to do that.

There are multiple ways to take time for yourself. You can identify your safe spaces and things you enjoy doing and then take the time to enjoy doing the things you like to do. You also have the option to say no to people. If you don’t have the energy or time to deal with something or take on another responsibility, you shouldn’t have to.

Staying strong is not something you should be expected to do. Even if you are trying hard and doing your best to stay strong, it doesn’t mean you should be expected to take on more than what you can actually handle. Yes, there is a difference between what you think you can handle and what you can actually handle. Don’t over-work yourself.

It is not selfish to take time for yourself. Whoever has told you that is wrong. It may feel like it sometimes, but taking time for yourself will likely give you energy when hanging out with other people and lower your stress levels.

You have to take time for yourself because otherwise, you’ll be drowned by your workload. You have to take care of yourself and put yourself first sometimes. Putting yourself first sometimes means that you actually have to take time for yourself as a means of self care.
