The Netflix series Adolescence, released on March 13, 2025, dives into the complex experience of growing up, focusing on a group of teenagers navigating relationships, trauma, and the pressures of transitioning into adulthood.
What sets it apart from typical teen dramas is the dark, mysterious event that runs through it—a murder that shakes the entire community, forcing the characters to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and each other. This unsettling mystery adds suspense to the emotional and social drama, making each episode unpredictable.
However, despite its strong character development and compelling plot, the end of Adolescence felt incomplete to me. Several storylines were left open-ended, including what provoked the character Jamie Miller to commit the murder. The ending felt abrupt, as it concluded with a phone call to Eddie, Jamie’s father, explaining that he was going to plead guilty.
After spending over five hours watching and finishing the short series, I was upset by the ending. My expectations were crushed, as they were set high due to Rotten Tomatoes rating of an extraordinary 99% rating on the Tomatometer.
It seems as though it needs a second season to feel complete, but to my disappointment, there isn’t one confirmed.
If another season does come out, ending the first season in this way is a clever way to ensure viewers want to come back to see the full and clean conclusion. I know I want to find out, as I was left with many questions.
Bullying isn’t a big enough reason for murder, so what is the underlying cause that Jamie would destroy his life to murder someone? What will happen to his family if found guilty? Where’s the murder weapon?
I don’t understand why all of this was left uncovered, as I can’t seem to find a deeper meaning to any of it. Maybe the producers just plainly forgot these key details, or there truly is something meaningful.
