The Ice Bucket Challenge was originally trending to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects neurons in the brain and spinal cord. There is still no cure; however, this challenge ended up raising thousands of dollars for research.
Around springtime, the challenge was revived by students at the University of South Carolina (USC), with the goal of spreading awareness and sparking more conversations regarding mental health. This movement originally started in March to try and raise money for Active Minds, whose purpose, stated on their website, is to help start “destigmatizing mental health discussions and fostering support on our campus. We believe in the power of open dialogue, daily mindfulness, and suicide prevention.”
All over instagram, individuals have chosen to take a bucket of cold ice water and dump it on their heads. The way it spreads is by people nominating others to also participate. On average, each person nominates three new people, so it just continues.
Currently, over $300,000 has been raised, surpassing the $250,000 goal. Anyone can donate to this cause by visiting their website.
