Uncovering the newer, stricter parking lot policy

Answering this year’s burning questions about why the parking lot is forbidden at lunch

A new school year at Mead High School  has brought lots of new and exciting additions.

There’s a new counseling office with fancy chairs, the school has grown a new wing, and the there is a brand new building for the Energy Academy.

However, there are also some new policies at Mead that are causing controversies between administration and the Mead High students. The administration has put in place a rule that states the students may not sit in their cars during lunch, passing periods, or off blocks. They either must hang out in the school or leave campus. This brings to question why this policy has been implemented.

In an interview with Mrs. Ayers, she stated that last year the school had 150 suspensions related to activity that would happen in the parking lot. Some of the activities that she said would go on in the parking lot were sex, drugs, and other inappropriate behavior. “We are not using that space that is productive and healthy.” Mrs. Ayers stated.

With this new rule in place, the hope is to have the number of suspensions lower drastically.

Mead High seniors Taylor Carinder stated, “I just don’t get it, I don’t understand why,” and senior Aleigh Trimble stated, “I like to eat in my car, not with a bunch of people.” Trimble also stated that she had talked to her mom about the new policy and her mom had said she kind of knew where the administration was coming from but still thought it was kind of pointless.

Yes, this new policy may not seem ideal to the students, but it’s in place for a good reason. It’s there to ensure safety and success for the Mead High students.
