Where are they going?: Makinsey Hamblin

Welcome to The Mav's Senior Tradition where we highlight our current seniors and discuss where they are headed to.

As the school year wraps up and seniors are deciding what their future holds, one senior is heading to the national capital to continue her education and make her mark on the world. Makinsey Hamblin (‘20) will be attending American University in Washington D.C. as a history major.

Hamblin said she chose this school “Because they offered [her] a good financial aid package and they’re in an area where [she wants] to be with lots of opportunities for internships.”

Hamblin hopes to find a career as a museum curator at the Smithsonian Museum, conduct independent research, or work with a nonprofit organization.

Reflecting back on her high school career, Hamblin said, “I’m ready to be done with high school. I need to go out and try something new.” However, she didn’t have a horrible experience. She especially enjoyed her teachers. “I liked all of my teachers, but Mrs. Hedlun probably had the greatest impact on me because she was responsible for a lot of the extracurriculars I did. Mrs. Sonnenberg also impacted me because she taught [AP] research.”

Hamblin is looking forward to her college experience. She said, “I’m looking forward to living in the city, being part of a cool program, and meeting like-minded people. I’m excited for internships and basically everything. I’m so excited.”

Though the pandemic has totally turned our worlds upside down, Hamblin is not letting it hinder her future success. She is looking forward to the future which will be quite bright for her.
