Hugo is excited to graduate and move into adulthood.

Where are they going?: Hugo De La Torre

Welcome to The Mav’s Senior Tradition where we highlight our current seniors and discuss where they are headed

Hugo De La Torre (’23) intends to join the workforce immediately after graduating high school. Hugo hasn’t yet determined where he wants to work full-time after graduating, but as of now, he is interested in construction. He said that his dad inspired him to join this kind of work and he’s interested in the idea of working on various sites.

Hugo said that he wasn’t interested in continuing formal education after high school because “School isn’t for [him], and joining the workforce would be [his] best option.”

Hugo said his most memorable year was freshman year — everything was new to him, and since it was a new chapter, he remembers it more vividly.

Hugo is proud of earning Maverick of the Month his junior year and also said he did his best academically that same year. Earning the award was unexpected, he shared, but something he appreciated.

Hugo has learned a lot of things since his ninth grade year; a lot of which he believes will help him navigate his adult life. He shared that he has become more patient the last several years. He has also learned that respect goes a long way and helps keep the path smoother.

Several of Hugo’s most influential teachers include English teacher Ms. Nichole Rue, Physical Education teacher Ms. Abby Hicks (who taught some of his favorite classes), and Social Studies teacher Ms. Warren. All of these teachers encouraged him to “do what [he] needed to” in order to be successful and grow. They each, according to Hugo, went out of their way to not just teach, but have more of an impact.

He said that sometimes students might think their teachers don’t care for them, but that’s not the case for those teachers “and more”.

He believes his peers should get to know their teachers and they might realize their teachers care about them too.

We wish Hugo luck on this new chapter of his life and are confident he will put the skills and life lessons he has learned to good use.
