We can’t wait to see the great things Kayla Steen will do at NMSU.

Where are they going?: Kayla Steen

Welcome to The Mav’s Senior Tradition where we highlight our current seniors and discuss where they are headed

To further pursue her future as a teacher, Kayla Steen (‘22) is planning to attend New Mexico State University with a major in elementary education and a minor in Spanish. She hopes to move forward with teaching in low income schools so that she can make a difference with the kids who need it most.

Her days here at Mead were made special with the help of Ms. Sonnenberg and her teachings. Steen said, “She’s just seen me [all the way] from when I was a little freshman to now.”

She has been a teacher to Steen for three of her four years of highschool and in that time become very close.

A high school memory that stuck out to her was coming back to in-person learning after quarantine took hold of much of her junior year.

She said, “After coming back to school, I had changed so much through being shut down and everything. I was like a completely different person.”

Her advice to underclassmen is to challenge yourself in the coming years. “I think that’s very important because if you don’t challenge yourself, you may not reach your highest potential,” she said.

We wish Steen luck as she goes in search to better herself and her community! We know she will make an awesome difference wherever she goes.
