Kanye West’s controversy has built his reputation

Over the years, Kanye West has made a persona around being a contrarian

“I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye, I gotta say at that time I’d like to meet Kanye. See I invented Kanye, it wasn’t any Kanyes, and now I look and look around and there’s so many Kanyes.” — “I Love Kanye” by Kanye West

Kanye West is known for walking the line of famous and infamous — both his achievements and reputation often consist of controversial actions or crazy statements.

He’s a trending celebrity who’s constantly in the spotlight and considered one of the best-selling male artists of all time. The rapper has definitely built a brand name for himself, though not one that is squeaky clean or spotless. It’s not everyday you see a former adult-tape star and controversial rapper gracing the cover of Vogue, is it? The fashion world had a mini breakdown when they saw Kanye West and Kim Kardashian appearing on the cover of Vogue magazine in 2014 – how could a man that doesn’t have style get on the cover of Vogue?

This is marked as one of Kim’s controversial moments and possibly the beginning of Kanye’s attempt at ruling the high fashion world. Despite the backlash, it’s safe to say the duo looked great.

Kanye took his “jokes” to new heights in fall 2022. Following Queen Elizabeth’s death in the U.K., the rapper took to his Instagram story to write, “London I know how you feel. I lost my queen too,” alluding to his divorce with Kim Kardashian. It’s getting clearer by the day that Kanye has no shame. Kanye has a clear tendency to stir the pot.

Along with that, we recently saw him wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt during a Yeezy fashion show, where he later said, “Everyone knows Black Lives Matter was a scam. Now it’s over. You’re welcome”.

Until a couple weeks ago he was the richest person of color in U.S. history but that seems to have changed, as not only is he no longer a billionaire, but his net worth has had a few zeros subtracted from it.

The rapper and music producer reiterated several times that Jews control the media because famous African Americans “have to have a Jewish manager, or are on a Jewish basketball team, or make a movie for a Jewish platform like Disney”. West said “it’s not hate speech, it’s the truth. [They are] the owners of the [B]lack vote” in the United States.

He decided to post a tweet to defend against any interpretation but it was quickly deleted by Twitter. “The funny thing is that I can’t really be anti-Semitic because black people are Jews too. You guys have played me and tried to eliminate anyone who opposes your agenda”, he wrote.

On the other hand, American Jewish Committee responded in a statement that the artist did use hate speech and that “you have to see that words matter, especially an anti-Semitic comment that recently appeared on social media”.

Altogether we see Kanye West do suspicious things and make questionable decisions on his social media platforms. He doesn’t seem to be too affected by his actions. We’ll simply have to wait and watch how his controversial behaviors on social media affect him and how he reacts to his fans’ responses.

Losing all that money can really affect a famous artist. Especially when that is all they know.
