PSAT and other practice tests are beneficial for students
Taking the PSAT helps students not only prepare for the test but have more post secondary opportunities
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, also known as the PSAT is given to freshman (PSAT 8/9), sophomores, (PSAT 10) and juniors—in the form of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).
This test helps students prepare for the SAT in the spring of their junior year. The SAT is the official test and is often looked at by colleges. While not all colleges look at the SAT, many look at it as part of admissions.
The PSAT helps give insight to students, administration, and teachers on students’ strengths and weaknesses.
Taylor Morris (‘25) said, “I enjoy taking the PSAT, it helps me understand what to prepare for in the future.”
The University of California did a study that found that due to the inequities in grading practices, the SAT was actually helpful in getting more students who could be successful in college into college, even if they didn’t have the GPA or study habits most colleges look for.
Ms. Lindsay LaPorte said, “There are many times in a variety of careers (not just for college) that people are asked to sit and take a long test. We don’t practice that a lot in school, so the SAT/PSAT is good for that.”
Advisory lessons are a great way for students to improve their scores. Students are encouraged to reflect on how they did on the practice test and ask the teacher questions.
Additionally, Khan Academy has practice tests for the SAT. Students have the ability to link their college board accounts in order to receive a more personalized experience.
LaPorte said, “I would say that participating in these tests and trying your best really helps us as a school better meet the needs of students. It is one data point, but combined with the practice exams and other measures, we can create educational experiences that meet the needs of each individual at MHS.”
