There’s a new TV series coming.

On April 3, 2023, news came to light that Harry Potter was in the beginning stages of receiving a reboot on HBO’s platform.

The beloved series debuted in 2001 as a movie franchise, and HBO plans on compiling the reboot into a seven season TV series with each season representing a book. Unlike the movies, a TV show would allow more time for the depth of the Wizarding World to be explored, something that the limited time of the movies didn’t allow.

Though the Harry Potter universe is still incredibly popular, J.K Rowling, its creator, is deep in media controversy, so it’s still uncertain what her role will be in the series. After the release of the videogame Hogwarts Legacy and the reactions of fans boycotting and shying away from it due to Rowling’s transphobic statements, it’ll be interesting to see engagement after the release of the show.

There’s also going to be an all-new cast, and while it refreshes the Wizarding World, it’ll be interesting to see how fans interact with the show without beloved original actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

With many of the original fans beginning to age out of Harry Potter, perhaps newer, younger fans won’t care too much about a fresh face for Harry.

More information regarding the reboot will be released soon in a presentation hosted by WBD on April 12 where the company’s new streaming strategy and service will be announced and delve into the collapsing of HBO Max and Discovery+ into one.
