TV Girl is an indie pop band based in Los Angeles, California. With a total of three band members including Brad Petering, Jason Wyman, and Wyatt Harmon, they released an album titled Who Really Caresin February 2016.
Who Really Cares has ten beautifully written tracks, giving the album a total length of 36:55. The album keeps the theme of how relationships can sometimes be bound through toxic emotions, not genuine love, and how some emotions can be so powerful that they can change someone’s entire perspective on a person.
“Loving Machine,” “Song About Me,” and “Till You Tell Me to Leave” are my top three songs from this collection. These songs all have their distinct sound and feel to it. All of which help the lyrics convey the story more clearly. Leaving you with the specific feeling of late-night restlessness or looking at your ceiling thinking about what you could’ve done better in your life. It’s such a nostalgic experience listening to these songs.
“Loving Machine” introduces us to Maddie Klein and her boyfriend who is her “Loving Machine.” The narrator tells us the story about how she is using him like a robot, only programmed to love her when she needs it and be wherever she pleases. We later find that the boyfriend knows her intentions, but he’ll never leave because of his deep love for her. I find all of this to be sort of relatable. As a girl in high school, teenage boys AND girls can kind of take on the same role as Maddie. Using people for the feeling of love and nothing more while never having the courage to leave because of your feelings towards them.
“Song About Me” is a great track about the narrator writing a song about his ex and her hearing it in a bar knowing it was about her. Embarrassed, she confronts him and lets him have a piece of her mind at the end of the song. This song makes more sense to people who have dated musicians or artists and have had songs or poems written about them. Sometimes it feels overwhelming or even cringeworthy to hear someone be so passionate about you. This melody sums up that feeling in a perfect way.
Finally, “Till You Tell Me to Leave” is a ballad about the narrator arguing with his partner, saying that he will not leave until she says that she wants him gone. He will stay until she points to the door and says goodbye. All of this speaks to my heart because sometimes it’s really hard to let go when you are just so infatuated with someone like that. You won’t truly leave until you know you are completely unwanted.
This album is perfect at giving you that feeling of nostalgia and late-night talks with that person you miss. The different rhythms and beats that all the tracks have are what make this album so unique. It has so many different sounds on its record, but they are related to one another, lyrically, musically, and emotionally.
This indie pop album is worth listening to and deserves the attention it’s been recently receiving.
I rate this album a 10/10 overall.
