During spirit week, the Mead boys basketball team competed in the Mead-Erie Invitational Tournament. The team showed out very well, going undefeated and winning the tournament.
The tournament started very well for the Mavericks. On Dec. 5, the Mavericks took on the Lakewood Tigers and effortlessly crushed them. Cruising to a 70-41 win, led by 19 points from Matthew Angelo (‘25), Kyler Crump (‘25), and Dominic McLawrence (‘24), the Mavericks looked to take the semi-final game on Dec. 8 by storm. They would be taking on the number one ranked team in 5A boys basketball: Vista Peak Prep.
Throughout such a strenuous game, the Mavericks displayed resilience and grit. Refusing to lay down and accept defeat, the Mavericks returned from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter and would win 54-52. Notable performances from the game were Kellen Tecu (‘24) scoring 10, Angelo scoring 15, and McLawrence scoring 16. With the win, the Mavericks moved into the championship spot and played Monarch on Dec. 9 for the title.
After another scrappy game, the Mavericks etched a 59-52 win over the Coyotes. Once again leading the way were Angelo and McLawrence, scoring 19 and 11 points, respectively. After a 3-0 run in the tournament, Mavericks boys’ basketball was named the champion of the Men’s Mead-Erie Invitational Tournament. The Mavericks will travel to Palisade for another tournament against the Western Slope schools.
