On Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, the Colorado Supreme court made an unprecedented ruling that former President, Donald Trump will be ineligible to appear on the Colorado ballot for the Presidential election.
Trump was removed from the ballot after a 4-3 vote from the justices. The voter’s claimed that Trump should be disqualified from the ballot under the 14th amendment following an act of insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump’s attorneys declared to appeal this decision to the United States Supreme Court. “The Colorado Supreme Court issued a completely flawed decision tonight and we will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision,” said Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung.
The US Supreme Court is the highest court in the nation, and will ultimately have the final say about the matter. Trump’s spokesperson, Alina Hanna said, “This ruling, issued by the Colorado Supreme Court, attacks the very heart of this nation’s democracy. It will not stand, and we trust that the Supreme Court will reverse this unconstitutional order.”
Although former President Trump doesn’t need Colorado to win the election, the danger for Trump is that other states may soon follow Colorado’s lead.
