Gnomeo and Juliet is a film that came out on Feb. 11, 2011 directed by Kelly Asbury. It is a great movie to watch with family and friends because of all the little comedy pieces put into the film, as well as the emotion-triggering scenes. There’s also a great spinoff of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” by making the characters gnomes in Capulets and Montague’s houses but still having some of the original scenes from the play.
One of my favorite aspects of the movie is the color choices with the different houses for Montague and Capulet. Kelly Asbury used warmer tones when he was making the love scenes and used cooler tones when Gnomeo and Juliet weren’t together; adding suspense to the movie and foreshadowing when they would meet and be together.
This movie is filled with foreshadowing, whether it be through color scheme, or scenes, while the significance of songs is very prevalent. You can tell that there was a lot of purpose put into all the behind-the-scenes of Gnomeo and Juliet.
For example, the song “Hello Hello“, played in the first scene, hinting at the fact that they were falling in love at first sight. The song then says, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” which points to the fact that they would break each other’s hearts at some point.
There were quite a few cinematic elements that were used, but the one that stuck out the most during the movie was the constant change of lighting during the scenes. For example, when it was day there was sunlight but at night there were little garden lights that the different houses used to light up their yard. The lighting even changed during the romantic scenes and the fighting scenes throughout the movie.
I loved this movie as a kid and I still do to this day. I think this is a good movie to watch if you like cute love scenes and Romeo and Juliet.
Overall this movie was great and very entertaining.
I rate this movie a 10/10.
