“Every opportunity you get, take advantage of it,” and the Mavs did just that in the football season home opener on August 30, 2024, against Pueblo South. Quarterback, tight end, and middle linebacker Ethan Elmore (‘27) offered this sage advice to incoming varsity players during game one of the MHS football season.
In the first two minutes, Elmore scored the first touchdown of the game, giving the Mavericks a head start. Another touchdown was made by wide receiver Noah Vroman (‘25) later in the quarter as well. The last touchdown of the first quarter was made by middle linebacker and running back Noah Chapala (‘27).
Elmore scored yet another touchdown one minute into the second quarter. Another touchdown was made with just 27.1 seconds left in the second quarter. By the end of the first half, the score was 33-0. Mead was blowing out Pueblo South.
The half-time show featured Mead’s Dance and Cheer Teams and the Maverick’s Marching Band. These included a well-executed dance routine. The band played “Thriller” by Michael Jackson for the first performance, and the cheer team joined for a marching band arrangement of “Land of a Thousand Dances,” made famous by Wilson Pickett.
Sousaphone player Lily Kaplan (‘26) said, “I think nerves got the best of us for a lot of people, and that’s completely understandable because this is their first time [playing the show for a crowd]. I think next time we need to connect as a band, so we can lock in.”
During the last half of the game, three touchdowns were made. One by Mead, which was called back by the referees on a penalty, and two by Pueblo South. Although the Mavs didn’t end up extending their lead in the second half, they continued to put pressure on Pueblo South, disabling them from catching up completely.
The Mavs rose to the occasion against Pueblo South and got the win for their first game of the season with the final score being 33-14 at home.
