Jordan Chiles won the bronze medal in the women’s gymnastic finals at this year’s 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. According to Sports Illustrated on Sunday August 11, The International Olympic Committee stated that they will be taking Chiles’ medal back after awarding it to Romanian athlete Ana Bărbosu.
Chiles had initially scored fifth in the Paris Olympics, followed by an appeal over the scoring. The reconsideration was later accepted, planting Chiles in third place and awarding her with a bronze medal.
Although the appeal was accepted, the Romanian Olympic Committee had stated that the plea submission had been four seconds after the one minute time limit grace period, rendering it invalid and setting Chiles’s score back to its original 13.666. Bărbosu’s score was 13.700, making her the new, technical winner of the bronze medal.
The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has submitted evidence that the appeal had been made during the one minute time period, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport would not accept this evidence and stated its decision cannot be changed.
The challenge involved Chiles’s Tour Jete Full as one of the important parts of her routine. Team USA believes she was not properly scored for the leap, both qualifications, and the team final.
