“The harder you WORK, the harder it is to SURRENDER,” star Quarterback Christian Hiner (‘25) said, and the Mavs used that to come out on top over Frederick in the second game of the season. The Mavs worked extra hard during practice this week to prepare for the game and dominate their opponents.
During the first quarter, Ethan Elmore (‘27) scored the first touchdown of the game to reach 7-0 early on. The first quarter was slow and didn’t have much scoring, but Mead was holding onto the lead. Although it wasn’t easy, the Mavericks held on to stay afloat against Fredrick.
Eli Davis (‘26) kicked a field goal to make it 10-0 with 11 minutes left in the first half. Frederick came right back in the second quarter to score a touchdown with four minutes to go. A few drives later, Frederick scored another touchdown with under a minute to go. At halftime, the score was 10-14 in favor of Fredrick.
At halftime, the marching band performed “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. The dance team performed their spectacular routine right after the band’s performance.
After coming out of the half, the Mavs started with the ball. They had a great drive, with Noah Vroman (‘25) catching a 70 yard touchdown pass. This touchdown pushed the Mavs into the lead. It was 16-14 with nine minutes to go in the third quarter. Throughout the remainder of the game, both teams went back and forth on multiple drives, but didn’t get back into the endzone.
The Frederick Golden Eagles were unable to push through the Mavs strong defense. Much like in the real world, a bull overpowers the eagle, leaving them in dismay. The battle was hard-fought, leaving the Mavs entering victory-formation; kneeling down on Frederick for one last time. The Mavs beat their rivals 16-14 at home.
