Half way through the soccer season, the varsity boys soccer has started the season off strong at 4-1-2. Their only loss came from Monarch on September 24, 2024 under the lights. It didn’t go as planned as the team tried their best to come on top and get the victory, but ultimately fell to the Coyotes.
The game started off slow for the Mavericks in the first half, getting good passes and good looks at the net, advancing the ball on the opposition but not taking advantage of these scoring opportunities. Josh Worrell (‘25) helped with great saves in the first 15 minutes of the game. These saves would end up helping the Mavericks stay in the game.
With 24 minutes left in the first half, Monarch scored the first goal of the game making the score 1-0. The Mavericks were fighting hard in the first half–hoping to keep the opponents from blowing them out before the end of the half. The ball was flying from one end of the field to the other. Both teams advanced the ball but defense ended up taking control for both teams. The MHS soccer team had good chances in the first half to even the score out or take the lead, but didn’t end up .
With 18 minutes left in the first half, Monarch went on a fast break to score, making the score 2-0 early against the Maverick soccer team. The game slowed down for the rest of the first half with both teams making good plays trying to score.
As halftime came around, the Mavs huddled around the coach talking about what they can do better in the second half, with the full intention of coming out strong.
At the start of the second half, it was going back and forth with both teams going down the field. It started off slow as the Mavericks got close to scoring the first goal of the game for them. With 28 minutes left in the second half, Monarch scored after a corner, making the score 3-0.
The Mavericks were on the opposition and got a free kick after the whistle. Devin Gonzalez (‘25) was up to take the shot. The goalie blocked it, but a teammate shot it and scored. That made the score 3-1.
“The best moment of the game was the free kick that I took, the goalkeeper saved it and we [still] scored,” Devin Gonzalez (‘25) said.
After that fantastic goal, the game was slow. There was no scoring to close out the game. The Mavericks faced a crushing defeat to Monarch. The final score was 3-1.
