This school year, Mead High School had an open School Resource Officer (SRO) position. Aguirre had no previous experience with working in a high school. He started his career working in Aurora as a basic control officer. A basic control officer drives around and pulls people over for drunk driving or speeding, along with a few other duties.
More recently, he had been working the graveyard shift at the Mead PD.
This opportunity opened up when Mead High School’s previous SRO became injured and had to take time off. Andres got injured during a traffic stop investigation. During this traffic stop he fell and injured his shoulder pretty badly. This position was sitting for a while, and no one had taken it.
That’s when Aguirre decided to try it out.
“I like how he watches and makes sure everyone gets inside during and after lunch” Enola Potter enjoys how he watches out of us and make sure we are all safe.
“It wasn’t until the previous SRO got injured [that] they were asking for people to fill in. Nobody was wanting to fill in, so I said I would give it a shot,” he said.
There was a big shift from working the graveyard shift as a basic control officer to then working as an SRO.
Alice Stewart likes how he’s always present. “I’ve noticed he’s very involved in the Mead community”
“There’s a lot of getting used to being more friendly and outgoing but it’s a good gig,” Aguirre said.
Aguirre enjoys going to concerts, hanging out with his family, and going to the gym.
