In the regional tournament at Roosevelt High School on November 9th, the Mead Mavericks girl’s volleyball team faced off against the Wellington Eagles.
After a nail-biting first set (26-24), Mead easily handed Wellington their final season loss, winning in three sets.
After a 30-minute break, the Mavericks faced off against the Roosevelt Roughriders for the most important game of the season, giving them the chance to qualify for state.
Roosevelt came out fired up at the start of the 1st and 2nd set defeating the Mavericks 25-19 and 25-10.
What seemed like a sweep for the Roughriders, turned into motivation for the Mavericks in the 3rd set. The team started gaining more momentum and continued to come out with a win in five sets.
After getting the win against Roosevelt they were awarded with a state qualifying plaque that was then held high and proud by Hailey Hall (‘25) for all to see.
At the Denver Coliseum, Mead faced off against Montrose for the first round of the state tournament on November 14th.
The first set of the state tournament between the Montrose Red Hawks and the Mead Mavericks was nerve-wracking. Both teams kept exchanging points and the score eventually hit 25-25. The girls had to win by two points, but they were still going back and forth. The Mavericks were able to continue fighting and win 28-26.
The second set started and Mead came out strong and carried on their momentum from the first set. They were able to come through with a 25-20 dub.
A mistake by Montrose at the end of a tight third set cost them the game. The Red Hawks had the ball 23-24 when Taylor Cooper (‘26) put too much power into her serve and the ball sailed out of bounds. The Mavericks won 25-23 completing their victory.
Mead faced off against Battle Mountain for game two of the state tournament.
It was another win for the Mavs; winning 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20. They will face off against Thompson Valley on November 15th at 2 pm.
