Chris Bumstead, also known as CBum, an IFBB Classic Physique professional bodybuilder was born February 2, 1995, in Ottawa Ontario, Canada. Stepping on stage in 2016 at 21 years old, Bumstead was excited to pursue his dream, not knowing what impact he would leave on the Bodybuilding community .
Chris first started exercising when he was 14 years old in high school, only training for the plethora of sports he was playing. There, he learned what it meant to work for his success, putting in extra time and effort. The ambition to improve himself and wanting more was a huge thing that encouraged him throughout his life.
Bumstead was attending Dalhousie University, studying Physical Health Sciences. At first, debating whether or not he should pursue a career in Physiotherapy. That was until he was introduced to the world of bodybuilding by his sister’s boyfriend (now brother-in-law) Ian Valliere, who had a stunning career as an IFBB Professional Open Pro.
Chris Bumstead was instantly hooked. From that point on, the journey to glory began for Bumstead. Hence, the birth of the name: CBum. Taking inspiration from infamous bodybuilders, Tom Platz, Barry Demay, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and of course his now brother-in-law Iain Valliere, CBum took his first steps on stage in 2014 at age 19. Then in 2016 at age 21, Bumstead earned his pro card which allowed him to take on the Olympia stage. After earning his pro card, CBum went on to rule the podium for six consecutive years after placing second place for his first two years, finally after his sixth win in 2024, CBum stepped down, having a well earned and deserved spot in the hall of fame.
Even after having to fight a constant battle with his mental health, sustaining a back injury in 2018, struggling to balance his personal life with competing, and the financial struggles that come with pursuing a bodybuilding career, CBum still had his mentor, Iain Valliere, his family and friends, and his wife who al supported him every step of the way.
On October 12th, 2024, CBum announced his retirement. The decision was ultimately made so that he could focus time and energy on his new family and his business. CBum brought a whole new look onto the stage, he was seen as the pinnacle of hard work, and he put inspiration in the hearts of millions.
It’s time for CBum to rest and Chris to turn a new chapter.
