As many students have probably heard from the daily announcements, there is a new school rule from the administration that prevents students from eating upstairs during the last 10-15 minutes of lunch. A supervisor will be stationed at the bottom of the stairs to prevent people from going up until lunch is over.
The decision to implement this new rule was a response to an issue raised by Ms. Becky, Mead High School’s new librarian. She pointed out that the library, which has become a popular space for students to hang out, was often overcrowded during lunch. Creating a situation in which there simply wasn’t enough staff members present to ensure that students were following the rules and using this space appropriately.
With a member of the administration absent, “We really wanted to clear out the top area because we don’t have consistent supervision up there”, stated ms. LaPorte.
Despite the well-intentioned reasoning behind the rule, there has been some speculation among students about how long the rule will actually remain. Some students have expressed doubts as to whether the rule will even last long enough to be remembered, as more pressing matters will arise daily, causing the rule to gradually lose its relevance.
Despite the skepticism, Ms. LaPorte has assured that the rule will stay in place for a while. She emphasized that the administration is determined to maintain it in the future.
“Moving forward, I don’t see us adjusting it unless we get more people for supervision”.
Regardless of the differing opinions, the administration is committed to the idea for the time being. As the school year progresses, it will be interesting to see if this rule has the intended effect of improving supervision and reducing overcrowding in the library and common areas.
