“Ur so pretty” by Wasia Project, “Promise” by Laufey, and “Cool about it” by Boygenius are three songs that don’t compare to any other. These songs are my top three favorites.
“Ur so pretty” by Wasia Project has been my favorite song for over a year now. I have built an emotional connection to both the lyrics and overall tone of the song. The melody is quiet and gentle, while the lyrics discuss falling in love for the first time and the deep attachment experienced along with that. The lyrics perfectly illustrate this feeling: “You’re so pretty // when you smile, it kills me” and “Can’t stop thinking ‘bout the // way you kissed me // Under the stars.” The song starts to build up and the music becomes slightly more eerie, as the lyrics show signs of fear and overthinking: “I’m so scared that the moments // we shared // Won’t happen again // I don’t want this to end.” The music resolves and resonates back, and the song concludes by repeating the chorus for the last time.
“Promise” by Laufey is a very heartfelt song that threads a story within the lyrics. The emotion portrayed through the vocals drew tears from my eyes. This song is about a person you can’t get over no matter how much you try. It is the perfect representation of longing for someone while knowing it won’t work out. The song starts very quiet and somber but builds into this beautiful picture and sense of yearning. The lyrics start by saying, “I made a promise to distance // myself” and lead to the chorus “No matter how long I resist // temptation, I will always lose // it hurts to be something // it’s worse to be nothing with // you.” It is clear there is a deep emotional connection Laufey has to these lyrics and those feelings are transferable, allowing anyone to empathize. It then gets to the quietest part of the song as she sings, “So I broke my promise // I called you last night.” Once these words are uttered I can’t hold back my tears, as it connects back to the start of the song.
“Cool about it” by Boygenius creates a folk-like feeling with the sound. This song is about losing a connection with someone and the heartbreak that goes along with that. This is portrayed through the lyrics, “I ask you easy questions about // work and school // I’m tryin’ to be cool about it” and “I came prepared for absolution // if you’d only ask // so I take some offense when // you say, ‘No regrets.’” For me, this song feels like a late-night walk with someone, both knowing this might be the last time they see each other. My favorite part of the song is near the end where the sense of heartbreak peaks. I appreciate how this song showcases a lot of vulnerability, specifically with the lyrics “Once I took your medication to // know what it’s like // And know I have to act like I can’t // read your mind.” I interpreted this as the full understanding of a person and a sudden shift of perspective on them. My favorite lyrics in this song by far are, “ I asked you how you’re doing and I // let you lie // But we don’t have to talk about // it // I can walk you home and // practice method acting.” This is a very somber song, but the lyrics hold a lot of power and tell the story perfectly.
Overall, these songs mean a lot to me, and I will continue to listen to them and embrace the atmosphere each one creates.
