Released in June 2021, Call Me If You Get Lost marks a significant shift in Tyler, The Creator’s music. He moves away from a lighter and soulful style to assertive and bolder music with this new album.
The soundtrack won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2022, making it Tyler’s second Grammy win. Additionally, he received the BET Hip Hop Album of the Year award in 2021.
The deluxe album “The Estate Sale” was released on March 27, 2023. It included the single “Dogtooth,” along with other tracks that were not featured on the original album.
Two tracks that I enjoy from this album are the tenth and eleventh songs, “SWEET/I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE.” The first part of the song, “SWEET,” expresses Tyler’s deep feelings for a girl, while “I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE” focuses on her developing mixed feelings and ultimately choosing another partner over Tyler. This combination of the two songs is one of my all-time favorites from Tyler, and I love listening to it because of its summery vibe.
The seventh track, “MASSA,” powerfully encapsulates the vibe of the album, exploring two themes. Tyler discusses the end of slavery in the U.S., using the term “massa” to highlight misconceptions and dramatic irony, of how Southerners mispronounced the word “master”. In the second verse, he reflects on his career, emphasizing that love and friendship have significantly shaped his life despite his success.
One of my favorites, track four, “WUSYANAME.”, tells the story of Tyler, who falls deeply in love with a woman he has just met, only to discover that she is already in a relationship with another man. I enjoy the beat of the song as well as the overall backstory.
Across-the-board, I enjoy the vibe of this album; it’s one of my favorite releases by Tyler to date. Most of the songs are on my playlist, although there are a few that I don’t particularly love. I rate the album a 9 out of 10.
