Hole was an American alternative rock band. Formed in 1989 by Courtney Love, the lead singer, and Eric Erlandson, the lead guitarist. Their debut album Pretty on the Inside was released in 1991, but in my opinion, their best album is Live Through This. The album is 38 minutes long with some of the best grunge songs I have ever heard. The 12 tracks add up to create an amazing album displaying true feminine rage. The songs are extremely influential to the female grunge genre and each song has deeper meanings and themes.
The fourth song on the album “Asking for It” is my favorite Hole song ever. The song is a commentary on the view of rape allegations and the victims. The words, “Was she asking for it?” are repeated. This is something that is often repeated towards victims. Courtney Love was inspired to write the song after being sexually assaulted while stage-diving at a concert. “So I just dove off the stage, and suddenly it was like my dress was being torn off of me…..When I got back onstage I was naked.” The experience caused Love to feel disturbed and wonder what she did to deserve it. The song was perfectly written and created. From the lyrics to the beats, the song is pure rock perfection. The song gets a 10/10.
The next song on the album “Jennifer’s Body” is another perfect grunge masterpiece. The song tells the story of a woman being kidnapped and murdered. It is another commentary about the violent crimes against women. Courtney Love and Patty Schemel took inspiration for the song from the kidnapping of Colleen Stan. Stan was 20 when she was kidnapped and kept in a box by a couple. The circumstances surrounding Stan’s kidnapping are very much alluded to throughout the song. The song was so popular that it inspired the name for the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body in 2009. The vocals on this track and the guitar are amazing. The lyrics and the meaning behind the song only add to the greatness of this song. It gets a 9/10.
The sixth song on the album “Doll Parts” talks about the insecurity about someone amazing loving you and not exactly understanding it. The song was written by Courtney Love when she and Kurt Cobain had just begun dating. The song is about how Love felt insecure and how wonderful Cobain was, as she struggled to understand and realize how he loves her. The guitar on the song is beautiful and perfectly matches the meaning of this song. The vocals are spectacular, bringing each lyric alive. The whole vibe of this song is amazing. The tone of Love’s voice in this song contributes to the weight behind the piece. It is truly beautiful. It’s a 9/10.
This album as a whole is life changing. When not truly paying attention to each song’s meaning, it’s easy to miss the important message. It is beautiful with amazing vocals, great guitar, and drums. The meaning of each song and the overall tone of the album contribute to how amazing this album is. Each song is beautifully written and well thought out. No part of this album was quickly created or simple. Every girl should listen to it; there is at least one song that you can relate to. The album is a perfect 10/10.
