Due to the influx of Mead students interested in the theatre courses, two new theatre classes will be offered next year. These classes will hopefully help distribute students and reduce crowds in the theatre program.
Theatre Basics is a single-semester elective course. This class will be similar to the fall play—or the Production Theatre class—as they will perform one-acts. These one-acts will resemble the ones the Mead theatre students performed in the fall. However, there will be larger leadership roles offered for juniors and seniors. These roles include being the director of one of the one-acts, meaning that person can select the cast and fully put together a one-act for the end of the fall semester.
This class offers a new side of creative freedom and a way for more students to be involved in theatre. It’s an opportunity to ease into theatre for those who are unfamiliar with it. It is also a chance to learn responsibility, and gain experience in the field, if that is something they may consider as their future career.
Drama 1 is the other course offered next year and is also a single-semester elective course. In this class, students will get the opportunity to learn all about theatre. Students will be exposed to both the acting, and technical aspects. The intent is to teach the elements of theatre that don’t get as much attention in classes that focus on plays and musicals.
Hopefully, this class will help students decide if theatre is for them. If interested, students may want to step up and take either the official Technical Theatre or Acting classes. Essentially, it will be a Theatre 101 class, without the co-curricular commitment aspect.
Production Theatre, which is the fall term course, will continue next school year as usual; however, there is now an audition process. Due to the high demand for the class, not everyone will be accepted, as there are simply too many students to put on a strong performance.
To audition, students are required to prepare two contrasting monologues, each one being a maximum of 30 seconds.
If you are thinking of taking any of these classes, you definitely should sign up for them. They will be a great way to express yourself and have a creative outlet.
