Last November, bond measure 5C, was approved by community members and includes a $739.8 million budget to update and build new schools in SVVSD.
To accommodate the growing population and new neighborhoods in Mead, the construction bond issue includes a PK-8 school located behind MHS.
Due to the growth in attendance in surrounding areas of Mead, Mead Middle School, and Mead Elementary are gradually growing in attendance. Currently, both schools are over capacity, and with city plans to create more neighborhoods surrounding MHS, an increase in the number of students is estimated.
The school is expected to open in the fall of 2026 and will be a two-story building. The south side of the building will be for preschool, kindergarten, and elementary students. The north side will be the middle school, with a common area in the middle. The gym and music room will also be on the north side whereas the track will be built right next to MHS’ football field.
Although not stated officially, it is believed by MHS admin that teachers from Mead Middle and Elementary School will move over to the new building.
New plans to direct traffic are in place. The dirt road on the south side of MHS’s tennis courts will be reconstructed to go back to the PK-8 school, with a bus loop on the end. The dirt road leading to the softball field will also be reconstructed. It will extend back to reach the new school, as well as widened with sidewalks.
The town has plans to make accommodations at the four-way stop on County Road 7 to better direct traffic. Reconstruction of the road will occur when the waterfront neighborhood begins to be built on the north side.
Luckily, the start times will be different for MHS and the PK-8 school, causing less concern for major traffic.
