As people, we naturally want to tell others what’s going on in our lives, to share the most recent events with the most important people, and maybe even smaller things throughout the day that don’t necessarily matter. It’s an integral part of the human experience to share and tell stories, so naturally, it can be hard to hold back, but… if it’s such an important part of life, why do it less?
Information gets spread fast, especially in high school. Everyone wants to know the latest drama, get in on the gossip, and know everything, even if it doesn’t concern them in the slightest. This can get pretty tiring.
Certain things will also matter a lot to you, but not so much to others. I find that it’s nice to keep some of my accomplishments and other things to myself and celebrate what I’m doing because I know what it means to me.
I’ve found that I have more time with my thoughts and the ability to really think through what I’m feeling. Not that I couldn’t or wouldn’t, think on my own before, it’s just different because I’m not getting a ton of other people’s input. Doing a hobby is a perfect time to think through whatever you’ve got going on.
In no way am I saying, “tell nobody ANYTHING,” or telling you not to take advice, of course not. Like I said, and like you know, sharing your accomplishments, stories, hardships, and more is a really important part of life, but there’s something relaxing about being a bit more reserved in certain aspects of your life.
On a personal note, I’ve always shared a lot with people—sometimes things I regretted sharing. Even writing this, I’ve gone over what I want to say, and what I don’t want to say many times. Reeling back on my sharing habits has truly brought me peace. I’m more focused on my work, less worried about others’ opinions, and I feel like there’s more free space in my head. Again, this is not a call to cease sharing everything, but this has helped me and maybe it will be helpful to you as well.
Just like everything, it’s all about moderation. Still, listen to and share with the people in your life, just decide what’s most beneficial to you and others.
