Improvements are being made by the Boys Varsity Soccer
The Boys Varsity Soccer team has made a big improvement from last year and accomplished feats never before seen in Mead’s soccer history
As the season comes to an end the Varsity Soccer team looks back on all that happened. Starting this year the soccer team was in high spirits to make a change in the program, and that they did.
They accomplished something that has never been done before: winning two games in one season. This may not seem like a lot to many, but every program has to start somewhere. They have been working all summer and all season to accomplish this. However, this was not accomplished easily and without challenges.
When the year first started, the team failed to get the results they wanted. They were failing to win games and play to their full potential. They felt that they were putting forth the effort but weren’t getting the results they wanted. But, at the end of the year, the team found out that all their hard work and effort paid off. They had new new leaders, a new work ethic, and new team players. “It was a process that we knew was going to have a good end to it,” remarked Chase Meining, a Men’s Varsity Soccer player.
Mead took their first win in four years three games after a close game against Sterling at which an unfortunate fight broke out between the players, when Estes Park came to the Mavericks home turf. With two goals by Rocky Bortz and one penalty kick made by Jimmy Shields, the Mavericks won with a 3-1 victory over Estes Park. Emilio Chavez says, “It is awesome to be apart of this team. To be able to say we won means so much. Freshman year we lost by five goals every game and that is the process. The losing streak has been snapped.”
However, the team wasn’t content with a single win. As the last game came along it was once again against Sterling. With a goal by Josh Kurtz and a last minute goal by Diego Cordero, the team beat Sterling 2-1 and took home their second victory of the season.
To finish off the season better than previous years was a big improvement to the team. They not only won one game, but finished off the season with a second win and a tie game a feat never done in Mead’s soccer history. It was a great end to a great season.
Look out for more improvement on the soccer team because they can only get better from here!
