Lars Messmer (‘25) plans on attending the University of Denver after graduating in May. He is intending to study sports journalism and get a double major in English with an emphasis on creative writing as well.
Career-wise, Lars really wants to be able to put himself out there and get a good job. He says, “That’s been my dream to be on a radio show or TV for Altitude Sports.”
Quite obviously, Lars has a passion for sports journalism and radio, but he also has an explosive passion for music, “I like to live life like I play music — fast.”
Lars’ love for music sprouted from his childhood, whenever his mom or dad would turn on the radio and listen to it on the way to school, he said, “I would always just bob my head and stuff to the music.”
Lars displays his passion for music in his band No Reason to Care, where Lars plays bass alongside his bandmates Drake (guitar), Cooper (drums), Anthony (vocals), and Sammy (rhythm guitar).
“The summer of sophomore year, Anthony and Drake invited me to be in a band, and that’s the band I’m in right now. No Reason to Care. Stream us on Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, anywhere you can.”
He explains how his bandmates made him a better musician, “They expected more from me and it was really fun.”
Football has been a big part of Lars’ high school career as well. He enjoyed being able to “put [himself] out there, and just being more active, and engaged with the community. I also think the memories are fun to look back on.”
Mr. Ackerman, Lars’ fifth grade teacher, is his favorite mentor.
“Shout out to him, he’s my homeboy. I love that dude. I was very behind because of Catholic School and Mr. Ackerman motivated me to be a better student and not give up when things are rough.”
Lars leaves his senior year with relief, and advice for incoming freshmen, stating “Just live your life to the fullest. You know, like YOLO, you only live once. There’s no reason not to be too afraid to, you know, join the football team. There’s no reason to be afraid to join a club. There’s no reason not to care.”
We wish Lars luck on all his future endeavors at the University of Denver!
