This Friday, Jan 26, the National Art Honors Society will hold its induction ceremony for students. The celebration will be held in the Mead High School auditorium from 6-8 pm. Instead of having a candle-lit ceremony, students will have their art on display to honor their commitment to NAHS.
To uphold their position in NAHS, students must acquire 30 volunteer hours in their community. Members are required to meet their hours before graduation, starting as early as their sophomore year. Their hours need to be art-related such as painting non-commissioned murals in public spaces and contributing to charitable art events. Students earned hours from a face-painting event at a Mead football game earlier in the year.
Vice President, Charlie Butheau (‘25) is excited to be a part of a community where artists get recognition. She said, “Having NAHS at Mead is really important because it recognizes talents when they otherwise wouldn’t be”.
Staff advisor, Katelyn Lawley, sponsors NAHS. Her students look up to her. She holds immense pride in NAHS and is excited for everyone to have the opportunity to take this step. To her, the ceremony represents how “all the kids actually want to do this and put forth that effort.”
NAHS is a community of sophomores, juniors, and seniors that all have a passion for art. The ceremony solidifies this and will take place as the inaugural for NAHS.
Patrick Wallis (‘26) said, “Joining NAHS has kind of pushed me into volunteering more which I love.”. Since students receive recognition at graduation, they must meet all requirements for the society. Wallis is excited to show off his art at the ceremony and continue to learn about the other members.
As a senior, Jade Marshall (‘24) wishes she could be in NAHS for longer before graduating, especially with the great leadership. She said, “I’m excited for the ceremony because it’ll be recognition of all that I’ve accomplished in art.” Marshall thinks the ceremony is one of a kind and is a big moment because it isn’t every day that artists get recognized in their field.
Congratulations to Mac Brommer, Charlie Butheau, Serri Turley, Sophie Gomez, Autumn Walker, Jade Marshall, Kenzie Carr, Shaelynn Capshaw, Patric Wallis, Hannah Green, Kaytlynn Shearing, Sabrina Teeters, Carlie Searcy, Connor Holcomb, Elisha Landis, Hailey Sato, Tania Flores, and Moriah Andersen!
