After spending 38 days at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for being treated with a case of double pneumonia, Pope Francis passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage, where bleeding occurs within brain tissue in between the skull and the brain.
After the death of a Pope, a nine-day period follows called Novemdiales, that dates all the way back to Roman times. Usually, the funeral will be taking place in St. Peter’s Square and the burial beneath the Basilica there. Pope Francis asked to be laid to rest in Rome’s St. Major Basilica in a simple wooden basket.
Following this will be a voting for the next Pope, where Cardinal Electors, who are under the age of 80, will isolate and cast ballots until one person has a two thirds plus one majority. After voting, the ballots are burned, sending up black smoke to signal that there hasn’t been a choice yet. Once a decision has been made, white smoke is sent to reveal that somebody has been selected.
Originally Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in December, 1936 by Italian immigrants. He majored in chemical engineering, but quickly decided to become a priest.
As a Pope, you have to make decisions on issues of faith and morality for Catholics around the world. His day consists of spiritual duties, administrative responsibilities within the church, and diplomatic engagements.
