On Monday, May 11th, Saint Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) and its broader community of Unified athletes and their supporters joined together at Longmont High school to celebrate the annual Day of Champions.
Athletes of all abilities — along with teachers, administrators, and partners — throughout the district gathered for a day filled with a wide variety of games ranging from bowling, to target shooting, to drumming, to kickball, and even a dunk tank (a fan favorite) where students could watch their principal get soaked into a pool of water.
While the event was hosted at Longmont High school, the day was filled with many different schools from the wider district like Mead, Erie, Silver Creek, Lyons, and Niwot as well. Despite the fact that each athlete was representing their respective schools, everyone came together and showed off athletic abilities and the community built around them.
Participants and onlookers shared in excitement, especially as this event also acts as a celebration of their work the entire academic year.
“Everybody’s here to celebrate, everybody’s happy and it’s just a nice cumulation of the whole year,” said SVVSD Administrative Assistant Melissa Lehman.
The energy on the field was truly electric as spectators and students cheered each other on throughout the day.
This event gives unified students more opportunities to make friends at other schools, showcase their athletics, and simply have a day of fun to finish off the school year.
“Its a great way to celebrate the end of the year with these kids,” said Mead High School Athletic Director Chad Eisentrager.
He added that he enjoys watching students “hav[ing] a blast” while enjoying their special day.
Unified partner Riley Kochevar (’26) from Erie high school repeated the sentiment of community and celebrations for students. She said that it is important that all students have the same opportunities. She said that having a day dedicated to meeting students from other schools is a way to ensure those opportunities are provided.
The Unified Day of Champions was a beautiful day filled with camaraderie and athletic excellence, creating and building relationships within the SVVSD Unified community and beyond.
The Mav’s Media Editor Ben Hergert attended the celebration with Editor Izzy Pacotti and created a segment you can view here with video from this special day.
