Animal Crossing is a very well-known franchise. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which continues to be the most recent installment in the series, debuting on March 20, 2020) sold over 40 million copies worldwide and was a global craze during quarantine. So, even if you haven’t played the game itself, chances are that you’re familiar with what the game is. Many recognize the music, art style, and the face of the brand—a brown raccoon named Tom Nook. The biggest critique of New Horizons is that it lacks life in its characters.
New Horizons adds many fresh mechanics to the game, such as being able to thoroughly customize your house and shape the island on which the game takes place. But the villagers that inhabit your cozy town are very static, very predictable, and very boring; it’s quite easy to find yourself reading the same five lines. However, that’s not to say that the Animal Crossing series isn’t capable of being very nuanced when it comes to its characters.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf does this to near perfection. This game, in comparison to its modern counterpart, contains conversations between the player and the villagers that are truly memorable. It’s much more emotionally rich. I’ll admit that New Horizons is a much more advanced product in terms of gameplay and customization, but New Leaf got one very important thing right: the dialogue. And arguably, that’s the most unforgettable aspect of any of the games.
The reason why the dialogue is so memorable is because the range of voices you hear throughout the game is really quite impressive. New Leaf has some very silly interactions, as well as some surprisingly heartfelt ones.
“Hey, [player]. I can’t sleep. I think I have what’s-it-called. Insanity.” -Cookie
If you play New Leaf during the late night, you’ll unlock special dialogue with the different villagers. This quote comes from Cookie, a peppy pink dog.
“Chilling is important. Actually, it’s probably the most important thing in the world.” -Bob
Bob is a lazy purple cat, and generally is considered a fan favorite for his silly, laid-back conversations. That said, he has some pretty deep interactions as well…
“But I’m kinda shy. I’m afraid of falling in love and getting hurt.” -Bob
Aren’t we all? The raw emotion that I feel after reading that line from a goofy purple cat always surprises me a little.
“In love? Well, I mean… I suppose there’s always that risk when you’re gazing into someone’s eyes..” -Flip
This is a perfect example of the emotional richness that New Leaf excels in. This sounds like something you’d hear from a friend, not something you’d hear from a corporate video game.
“Do you ever get sad when an old memory resurfaces? It’s funny. Even a good memory can make you cry.” -Diana
That’s an experience any human can relate to. It’s something that resonates with the deeper parts of your being. This quote bubbles up in my brain every once in a while when I feel melancholy.
“Never underestimate the value of being just who you are. Life isn’t about being extreme all the time.” -Lolly
This is my favorite quote from New Leaf. Even though it’s been 11 years since playing this game, this conversation was so impactful that I remember it after all this time. It seems it’s not just me who’s been enchanted by New Leaf dialogue. User “iamliterallyyou” on TikTok posted a slideshow on August 8, 2025, containing screenshots of the various interactions the player has between the villagers. The following quotes are from the comments section of that TikTok:
User “creamofbroccolisoop”: “I wish horizons had kept these lines, I just run past my villagers now cause they always say the same thing… it feels so empty talking to them.”
User “Sarah”: I started tearing up at [Lolly’s dialogue]… I love this game and am so grateful I was raised on it.”
User “serendipity”: “really needed to see this today. Like unironically. It’s silly how much a game can make you feel things….”
Animal Crossing: New Leaf may not have sold as many copies as New Horizons. It may be older and slower, but the impact it’s had on its players cannot be denied. It is beloved, well-written, and nostalgic in a strangely heart-wrenching way.
