The Mavericks Broadcast Network has hit the ground running this school year. The new program started by Ms. Lammey has broadcast six games already this year. There is also a student-led show called “MAVCENTER,” which recaps each sport. But how did this program begin?
The idea of the class began two or three years ago when a few students in MavTV were interested in live streaming. Ms. Hedlun sent those students to talk to the teacher for the Golden Eagles Broadcast Network at Frederick. He told them that it takes a lot to stream a game. This sparked the idea for Ms. Lammey to start our own program. She wanted to learn more before starting the program, but decided to go for it. Ms. Lammey received help from the Erie and Frederick teachers to figure out the equipment needed. Dr. Young, our previous principal, helped her purchase the equipment needed last year so the program could start this year.
She wants anybody interested in the class to know: “[There is] no experience necessary. What we’re looking for is someone with a love for sports and a good work ethic.”
There are also many opportunities for students to be involved, no matter what their interests are. There are many roles, such as camera, sound, lighting, social media, marketing, and more.
The student-run broadcast also has a major impact on the community. Many people within the community can enjoy their local high school team, along with families that live out of town. The promotion of these games not only helps the students running the broadcast, but also the student-athletes playing. Students are able to build hands-on experience with how a broadcast is put together and build relationships with each other. However, Ms. Lammey is not quite satisfied as she plans to build on the progress so far.
Ms. Lammey has set many goals for the future, including one for this year: “Our goal by the end of the year is two words: instant replay.”
The dedication and goal setting that Ms. Lammey holds will take this class and students far. She has even more plans as the class grows.
“I want us to be what a small college sports marketing and broadcast teams would be. So I want industry-standard equipment.”
There are also plans to make a mobile broadcast trailer that can go anywhere to broadcast. The class is off to a great start, but looks to grow throughout the year and future years. The future is bright for Mavericks Broadcast Network.
