Wednesday night was an emotional one for the MHS Boys Soccer team. After all, the thought of seniors on the team graduating is quite heartbreaking. These boys were mentors, and teachers for the young players who have now developed larger roles on the team. Their legacy for the sport of soccer at Mead will stay for years to come. While the game ended in a tie, the boys certainly won in honoring and celebrating the leadership and accomplishments of the seniors on the team.

Senior night celebrates all of the senior athletes on the team, who have worked incredibly hard to get to their current spot on the team. There’s no doubt that some of these athletes are phenomenal workers, and put in a ton of effort to become a valued part of this team. Many of the senior athletes on this team are proud of their academic and athletic achievements here at Mead. Several players have maintained a 4.0 GPA (grade-point average) throughout high school, and others who have overcome injuries. There’s no doubt that these guys are some of the hardest workers on and off the pitch. This year’s group of seniors will certainly be missed, but also honored for all of their academic, personal, and athletic accomplishments. Some seniors certainly demonstrated their athletic capability and achievement on the pitch in this game as well.

While the game itself started slow, it was clear that Mead was ready to take charge of the game towards the end of the first half. With about eight and a half minutes left to go in the half, Logan Knight (’24) scored a beautiful goal in between multiple defenders. This was his 22nd goal over the course of his high school career, and it couldn’t have come on a more perfect night. They remained a steady pace throughout the rest of the game. Focusing more on defense, and making sure the team doesn’t lose their lead.

The team was doing a remarkable job of keeping Holy Family from scoring. Holy Family, pounding out shot after shot, wasn’t successful until midway through the second half; when a block from Jordan Lohr (’24) went straight to the feet of a Holy Family wingman. This goal ended the Mavericks lead, making the game 1-1. Despite this goal, the team evened out their focus; pushing for an offensive attack towards the end of the game. While Holy Family was successful in stopping the Mavs from scoring another goal, they weren’t successful in killing their spirits on senior night.

Although the game ended in a tie, senior night was a definite victory for the Mavs. The seniors on the team had their accomplishments and achievements celebrated alongside their family members and loved ones. Seniors on the Mead Boys Soccer team were honored for their hard work and dedication to the MHS Boys Soccer team. Among this group were Dalton Berg (’24), Jordan Lohr (’24), Jake Gonzalez (’24), Logan Knight (’24), Brady Smallwood (’24), Connor Good (’24), and Matthew Starks (’24). This tremendous group of athletes, who have meant a great deal to this team as mentors and key players, will be graduating in 2024. As the regular season comes to a close, and with senior night behind them, the MHS Boys Soccer team certainly look forward to their upcoming playoff run.
