Fresh from all around the world, HYBE and Geffen Records brought together six extremely talented girls to start a new “global girl group.” The girls are Jeong Yoonchae, Manon Bannerman, Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Megan Skiendiel, and Sofia Laforteza.
Almost nobody saw the group coming, with very few announcements from either company or any of the girls. Katseye took storm when two of their songs on their first extended play (EP) SIS (Soft is Strong) blew up on social media.
“Debut,” the first song, was their literal debut. They hadn’t had any sort of fame before this song, but many people online quickly caught onto the catchy beat and fun dance. It was a song that felt like a mix of pop and it makes you feel like your baddest self. As their first appearance together as a group, they did a beautiful job. They were consistently in sync together, and it felt like they had been working together for years.
The second song, “Touch” really blew up everywhere. K-pop lovers were in love with this new girl group, and TikTok and Instagram were covered in people doing the simple dance along with it. “Touch” falls in what Eyekons call Katseye’s “eras,” and all agree that Yoonchae, in particular, really stuck out. She pops in a way no other member does while performing or while filming the music video. It showed everyone exactly how talented she is, despite being only 17.
“My Way” is third on the EP. It was a sweet and slower song, with a fun and upbeat sound to go along with the cute lyrics. The song talks about how they’ve all found “their way,” and how even if their hearts break or if it “all burns out,” they still can and will do it their way.
“I’m Pretty” is my personal favorite. It’s got the catchiest beat, and along with it, sweet and inspiring lyrics such as, “But I’m pretty, pretty // Pretty sure I’m not done healing // But I’m pretty, pretty // Pretty sure that I’m still breathing.”
The last song on the EP is “Tonight I Might.” Despite both “I’m Pretty” and “Tonight I Might” being often forgotten about, I believe that they’re the best. “Tonight I Might” talks about how it’s not right to do things like get “high on someone’s kiss” or pretend people are your friends when they’re really not, but in the moment, it’s so fun.
I think this whole album is meant for a late tween, early teen audience. It talks about messages often told to those age groups and has beats and lyrics that would catch the ears of those in the 11-14 range. Despite being for a younger audience, I really enjoyed the whole album.
