Daniel Caesar is known for multiple songs that have repeatedly gone viral on social media, including “Best Part” (1.9 billion streams) and “Superpowers” (475 million streams), amassing a total of 3.87 million listeners.
Though there is no total number of Caesar’s unreleased songs, his most popular ones are: “Horsepower,” “Indecision,“ “Innocence,” Birds of Paradise,” “Medulla Oblongata,” and more.
Out of all his unreleased songs, “Innocence” is my favorite. The song seems to have multiple meanings, mainly about losing innocence. Representing the first version of yourself, who was naive, hopeful, and pure. Caesar conveys a sense of regret and yearning, especially when he sings, “I wish things didn’t turn out this way // I wish I could go back to when things felt simple and pure.”
Most especially reflected through the song is the growth throughout everything he’d been through; he learned, he grew, and he gained, portraying a bittersweet feeling.
My favorite lyrics are, “I’m drifting from my innocence // I wanna be a kid again.” I think being a kid again is something we all yearn for. To be a kid again is for life to be easy again.
I personally find Caesar a little overrated since I often only hear his viral songs, rather than unreleased or underrated songs.
Recently, I have been listening to more of his music. I will admit that he does have good songs, and some do really stick out and differ from his others. Though I really cannot escape that so many of his songs sound the same and are repetitive.
Another unreleased song that I like is “Medulla Oblongata,” and it’s different from any other song I’ve listened to, most specifically because of the lyrics. “Medulla Oblongata” is a part inside your brain, yet the song is not about the part in your brain—It’s about being able to love someone so deeply that it feels physical, not just mental.
His unreleased songs differ heavily from this concept. They all have some sort of uniqueness to them, which I really like. I think it’s unfair that some of Caesar’s most popular songs are also the ones that I think are not his best.
Daniel Caesar’s unreleased songs really are the best: they’re unique, nostalgic, and captivating.
