[Writer’s note: I wrote this work as a response to an argument between Rose and Troy in Fences, being from Rose’s perspective. Troy admits to getting another woman pregnant, saying that he was stuck on standing in one place. Rose gave Troy all of her. She planted herself inside of Troy and waited to bloom, but she knew nothing was going to grow.]
I buried my seed within you
with the promise of soil, water and care,
how could I not?
I buried my hopes, my love, my dreams within you
giving you everything you needed,
abandoning my passions for our garden,
For our garden,
to bloom,
to grow,
to flourish,
I buried my seed in you,
you promised soil, water and care,
but the ground is dry,
the soil is hard,
there is no care,
I buried everything in you,
nothing has grown,
nothing will grow,
My seed will remain buried,
trapped in the dirt,
lifeless in the dream of our garden,
a garden that will never bloom,
I buried myself in you,
there I will rot and decay,
remaining a memory of the day.
