Sadie Steen (‘24) plans on majoring in Criminal Justice at University of Denver to pursue a career in emergency management. She decided her major based on research she did in her spare time. Not only was it financially appealing, she’d enjoy and be skilled at it.

Her plans for her first year include living on campus to get the authentic college experience, but eventually she hopes to get an apartment in Denver when nearing her second year.

Sadie chose DU because she already has a strong familiarity with the campus. She has been going there to watch college level gymnastics meets with her family for years, in addition to the tour she took as a middle schooler with her older sister, who was graduating at the time. With all this in mind, DU seemed like the perfect fit.

Though it is easy to decide what you want when your best option is in front of you, a backup plan is always necessary. Steen’s backup schools included CU BoulderCSU, and CU Denver

When asked what she learned during her four years at Mead High School, she stressed the importance of taking opportunities when they present themselves and branching out of your comfort zone.

Steen said, “[I’ve learned] social skills if I’m being completely honest. Just being more outgoing.”

Steen’s favorite classes throughout high school have been AP music theory and her sophomore US History class. In her years at MHS, she’s formed new connections with her teachers and peers and discovered a few classes she truly enjoyed.

The last piece of advice from Sadie includes making your deadlines when applying for scholarships.

“They approach a lot faster than you think,” she said.

We wish Sadie all the best in the coming years and are eager to see her succeed.
