The players jump up in excitement after Klatt dismisses them with 3 “We Are Mead”

Homecoming Friday: A day filled with excitement and fun from the assembly to the parade to the football game.

Note from the author/photographer: I wanted to do more with this day, but — as things go — the day somewhat got away from me. I hope you enjoy the photos I was able to get.

If you would like any photos of yourself, send me a PM: @2020Exposures

  • I’ve walked through this front entryway more times than I can count over the past 3 years, but this is the first time I’ve seen it with a cool backlight like this and taken the time to truly appreciate it.

  • Class shirts were passed out at the beginning of the day to be worn throughout the day.

  • Show Maverick pride next week by participating in the spirit week hosted by Student Council.

  • Mr. Lemons and Brennen Dibella review potential music for the next concert. Dibella, a Senior, is a starter for the Varsity football team as well as a drum major for the band, but he was not able to play at the Homecoming game due to a foot injury.

  • Mrs. Ervin shows her Maverick Pride as she dons a cape brought for her by one of her students.

  • Jazz Choir warms up before their performance with Jazz Band at the assembly.

  • The Choir shows their Mav pride and gets excited before the assembly.

  • I had an ongoing competition with my friend, Trevin Haines, of how many times I could catch him making a silly face. Aiden 1 – Trevin 0

  • Practice started in the dark, with the only light streaming in through the window.

  • Jazz band practices September for the second time ever with Jazz Choir. Band had received the piece less than 2 weeks before the performance.

  • Normally I would be down there with my fellow trumpets, but my job as a photographer left me unable to perform with them.

  • Scott Harton, Senior royalty, and Axel Manica, a Senior in jazz choir, do the foot dance while the Jazz Band plays one of their songs as warm up.

  • The drumline warms up in the hall before the assembly. During warm ups the drumline moves away from the rest of the marching band to not drown them out.

  • William Oster, a Senior and one of the three drum majors, leads the band in their warmup routine.

  • The band get’s crazy before their performance at the assembly.

  • Students begin to file towards the gym to begin the assembly.

  • Mavro mimics the drumline while they play a cadence to welcome the students to the assembly.

  • Jazz Choir preforms their first song with the Jazz Band for the gathering crowd

  • The Cheer Team begins their routine. This routine was a special one as they began by facing the underclassmen instead of the upperclassmen.

  • Cheer ends their routine with spectacular ariels facing the upperclassmen.

  • The Dance Team followed Cheer with an equally impressive routine.

  • Two of the most underrated members of the jazz band, Ryleigh Stephen (Guitar) and Danielle Garcia (Bass) lock in with Brandon Feaster on drums and Alexis John on piano to keep the jazz band on track in the music.

  • Jazz Choir performs their second song with the Jazz band in front of the student body.

  • Ryan Yancey, my fellow editor (and producer for Mav TV), gets video of the assembly.

  • The the sophomore nominees for homecoming royalty, Jocelyn Roberson (left), Malia Harton (middle) and Kaitlyn Saunders (right), get hyped up before the games begin.

  • Taylor Kamigaki, Senior, starts off the games by delivering a generous helping of whipped cream to fellow Senior royalty Brandon Bartush’s face.

  • Junior royalty Sydney Bell, racing with the Freshmen royalty, smears Avery Kratochvil with whipped cream.

  • Scarlett Hlavacek laughs after getting her face covered in whipped cream

  • Avery Kratochvil is helped up by her fellow royalty after she slips on a pile of cream.

  • Will Maher, Junior, stands covered in cream.

  • The second game, one where the royalty had to drink out of these cups filled with a mystery drink, was cancelled due to health concerns.

  • Trevin Haines, Junior, competes with the rest of his class as they race against the senior class to be the first team to land a cone in each of the 6 trash cans.

  • Scott Harton takes his turn throwing the cone. The seniors would go on to win this game.

  • Tanner Strong, a Junior and the third drum major, gets ready to lead the band for their performance in the parade before the football game.

  • This might be the worst weather ever for Mead’s homecoming football game. The downpour started around 5:30 and didn’t let off until past 7:45.

  • Players from the football team wait inside the locker room before the game.

  • The football coaches talk in the office while the players warm up from the bitter cold outside.

  • Coach Klatt gives a pep talk to the assembled team before they head out to the field.

  • Some aren’t aware of this, but before every sing game Klatt and the team link together and pray.

  • Even through the rain the drumline leads the football team down to the field. The rest of the band was not able to play due to the rain though. The moisture is terrible for the instruments.

  • Early in the first quarter #9 KJ Jacobs, Senior, deflects and then intercepts a pass that he then returns for a touchdown.

  • This play was featured in 9News as play #4 of the week: https://www.9news.com/video/sports/high-school/football/9preps-honor-roll-top-plays-oct-9/73-8276874

  • The rest of the team cheer’s KJ on to the end zone. The pick-6 puts Mead in the lead 7-0, after the PAT by #47 Taylor Kamigaki, Senior, with more than 7 minutes left in the first quarter.

  • A hard tackle by Senior #27 Tucker Jones knocks the ball loose. The fumble is recovered by #5 Trey Ward, Junior, but the play was ruled dead before the ball came out.

  • The freezing rain makes the ball extremely difficult to grip and hold tight.

  • Trey Ward holds up the recovered ‘fumble’ that was overturned. Mead, however, would keep Skyview from advancing past Mead’s 45-yard line.

  • A poor snap from Skyview results in another fumbled ball only 4 plays after the previous fumble.

  • Unfortunately none of the Mavericks are able to recover the ball, but they are able to force Skyview to an almost impossible 2nd-and-32.

  • Skyview is unable to convert and is forced to punt. The ball is downed around Mead’s 8 yard line.

  • The second play after Skyview’s punt is an outside run by #23 Jake Wachter, Junior.

  • Wachter takes the ball 81 yards home through the rain and makes his first of 3 touchdowns for the night. A successful PAT by Kamigaki sets the score 14-0 Mead with just over 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter.

  • Jake celebrates his touchdown with #42 Eli Mackey, Sophomore.

  • Mackey falls to the ground after the celebration.

  • Mead kicks after that score. Skyview’s receiver is brought down before the 20.

  • A flag on the previous play puts Skyview on their own 4 yard line. An overthrown pass results in 3-and-25 on the 4.

  • Safety! Mead takes advantage of Skyview’s poor field position and forces the Wolverines’ quarterback to scramble. He falls back into the end-zone where the Mavericks get a safety.

  • Ward celebrates the safety with two other Mavericks, #71 RJ Lopez, Senior, and #20 Devon Edwards, Junior.

  • Skyview punts to Mead after the safety. #3 Brayden Keys, Sophomore, returns the ball back to Mead’s 49 yard line.

  • #26 Nathan Bailey, Sophomore, takes the ball for a run on the first play of the drive.

  • Bailey takes the ball 57 yards home for a touchdown. Mead is up 23-0, after the PAT, with time still left in the first quarter.

  • These four images, although blurry, are included to show how close I am to the action and how quick on my feet I need to be. I hadn’t even seen Trey until after he was already falling towards me. He landed where I was crouching less than a half second earlier.

  • The dance team huddles up before their halftime performance.

  • The dance team learns a new routine for every game, as well as a special dance specifically for the Homecoming assembly.

  • #90 Jay Olson, Senior, takes the Wolverines’ ball carrier down at the start of the 3rd, effectively ending their drive. Skyview is unable to advance any further and is forced to punt.

  • Wachter completes his third touchdown of the game. A relatively short 14 yard run increases Mead’s lead to 37-0, after the PAT.

  • Wachter celebrates his touchdown.

  • #47 Taylor Kamigaki, Homecoming King, kicks to Skyview after the score.

  • A breakaway touchdown attempt is thwarted by #39 Easton Willyard as he kicks on the afterburners and tackles Skyview’s #33 from behind.

  • Unfortunately for the Mavs, the run puts Skyview close enough for a touchdown, bringing the score to 37-7.

  • Brayden Keys returns Skyview’s kickoff back almost to Mead’s 30. The Mavs aren’t able to capitalize on this field position and are forced to punt after going 3-and-out.

  • #14 Jason Pelzel, Sophomore Homecoming Prince, is starting quarterback on junior varsity and backup QB and outside linebacker for the varsity team.

  • With 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter, #6 Hayden Sock, Sophomore, intercepts a pass and returns it just before the 30. The Mavs don’t have enough time to score off of this though.

  • Even with no band the football team and student section lined up on the fence to sing the fight song.

  • Coach Klatt silences the crowd to address them after the win. In the background Skyview players form a similar crowd around their coach.

  • The players jump up in excitement after Klatt dismisses them with 3 “We Are Mead”
