Last Thursday the students of The Mav traveled to J-Day, a Colorado Student Media Association (CSMA) hosted journalism event.

According to reporter Shelby Lewis, “It was pretty interesting. We went around to panels getting information that we wouldn’t normally get in a regular class. It was beneficial.”

The day opened with a welcoming statement by Greg Luft, chair of the Department of Journalism and Media Communication, at 8:45, followed by two short speeches from Sue and Bruce Benson, and then two awards were given out. At 9:20, the students split into the “learning sessions”, which went from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and were divided into four blocks consisting of 45 minutes each. At 1:10, the conference wrapped up with an awards ceremony and closing speech by Greg Luft.

During the third block, many of the presentations were on topics that did not pertain to us as a school or newspaper. Due to this inability, several of the students went to get lunch and enjoy the piano room and beautiful fall day. “Truth be told, I had fun when we were messing around with the piano,” Shelby Lewis recalls, “but Will [Brown] couldn’t keep a tune.”

The Mav won the Best of Show Award for 3A/4A Web Design. None of the staff were expecting it. When asked how she felt, Mrs. Hedlun said that her immediate reaction was, “Oh my [Gosh], we actually won. Who’s gonna go get the award? Shelby!”
