Comedy film Roofman, released to theaters on October 10, 2025, is a true story about former soldier Jeffrey Manchester who has taken his role in becoming a professional thief.
Manchester finds a hideout inside a Toys “R” Us after spending months in jail for robbery and alleged kidnapping, surviving for months while planning his escape.
He learns to be a member of society at night, while attending church on Sundays, where he finds Leigh Wainscott, played by Kirsten Dunst, a member of the church. She is unaware of his secret as they begin to create an intimate relationship throughout the months.
This movie was one of the funniest films that has recently been released. In my opinion, most movies being released today are washed-up versions of old movies. No new ideas have been created nor explored, especially in the comedy and horror genres.
I’m getting tired of paying to go to the movies and being sorely disappointed in the film I chose to watch, as they tend to be just another knockoff. One thing this movie did is not disappoint, and had me laughing the entire time.
Roofman is funny because it takes a wild true story and plays it with a mix of comedy and emotion. The idea of someone breaking into stores like McDonald’s for a little extra cash is so ridiculous that it makes the audience naturally laugh.
The movie doesn’t just rely on the absurd actions of Manchester, but builds sympathy for him. He’s trying to do it right in all the wrong ways; he’s both a criminal and someone you root for as his actions were for a good cause.
Channing Tatum, who took the role of Manchester, brought a goofy charm to the movie. The writing and pacing of his character kept the movie light during tense scenes, while keeping the plot focused on exploring Manchester’s loneliness and need for connection in times of solitude.
Altogether, Roofman is a good movie to watch because it balances comedy while remaining heartfelt. It stands out because it’s based on a true story that’s almost too strange to be real, adding to the humor of it. It makes you laugh, but it also makes you wonder what drives people to take these wild—and illegal—acts.
