Golf is one of those sports that seems to be confusing to everyone, including those who play it. At its core, golf is the act of simply hitting a small, white ball into a series of holes using different clubs, all in as few hits as possible. Within the sports world, it’s known for being a highly respectful and polite game to play.
Golf is played on a grassy course that mainly consists of 18 holes. The main goal is to get your ball into each hole with the least amount of hits possible. You start at the tee box, aka the start of the hole. From the tee box, you will generally use a club called a driver, which is meant to hit the ball the furthest distance possible.
If you hit the ball far enough, you will end up on the fairway, which is the term for the area between the tee box and the well-trimmed grass that makes it easier to hit the ball. After about one or two solid hits, you should have the ball on the green. Putting is the most recognizable part of golf; in fact, it inspired its own spin-off sport, more commonly known as putt-putt.
The scoring for golf can also be quite confusing. There are many different names for each score: Condor, Albatross, Eagle, Birdie, Par, Bogey, Double Bogey, and Triple Bogey. All of these names represent a different number in relation to Par. Par is the number of strokes considered the standard to reach the hole.
There are Par three, four, and five holes, each decided by the length of the hole. Par four, for example, expects you to reach the green in two shots then, using two putts to finish, with a total of four hits. The same applies to Pars three and five, each giving you a set number of strokes to reach the green and then putt.
Here is a table demonstrating what each score would mean depending on the Par of the hole.

When watching professional golf, you will see crowds of people surrounding a group of usually four golfers and their caddies. The best way to describe why the caddie is there is for the same reason CEOs have secretaries: to handle tasks the CEO is too important to spend their time on.
In professional golf, a caddie’s specific job is to keep the clubs organized, tell the golfers what club to use, give advice, and clean or set up shots. The overall purpose of a caddie is to keep the golfer fresh and ready for their next shot, allowing them to focus on the game rather than the weight of their golf bag.
While the basic idea of hitting a ball into a hole seems simple, the game becomes competitive because players use a wide range of tools, such as many different clubs, different types of balls, markers, gloves, towels, brushes, grass seed, and even food and water. The most important items from this list are the clubs. These include putters, woods, irons, and wedges. It may sound straightforward, but each category has several specific clubs designed for different distances and unique situations on the course.
Now, you have a basic knowledge of the game of golf. There are people who write books and books on how to play, and they recommend watching the sport, as it is the best thing you can do to understand further. Congrats, you are officially no longer a dummy!
