The Mead Unified game vs. Niwot on January 29 was a close game. Mead players worked hard the entire game to try to catch up to Niwot’s leading score. In the end, Mead fell behind by 2 points, but it was hard fought the entire time.
After being 10 points behind at the last substitution, with 45 seconds left on the clock, Mead had caught back up to only two points behind.
Tegan O’Brien (‘26) with 20 seconds left scored a two point shot tying the score 60-60. The hope for the game to end in a tie was high.
Parents’ and students’ celebratory claps roared in the gym. This was until the team was cut short as #23 on Niwot took the ball down the court and made a two pointer. Leaving Mead two points behind with only five seconds on the clock. Mead tried to recover with one last shot, but ultimately missed, and Niwot won 62-60.
That being said, to Mead’s Unified basketball team and all of their supporters, it’s clear to see that the game is not all about the score. This is obvious as spectators stood celebrating their game and as the team lined up to give high fives.
Throughout the game, Mead worked like a well-oiled machine. Spectators could see their unity, commitment, and overall determination.
Ayden Baker (26’) was a prime example of this in the first half when he posted up and chased his opponent around the three point line, not backing down and letting him in for an easy shot. The defense Baker put up made #3 on Niwot have to get creative — they ended up bounce passing to a teammate under Baker’s arm to finally get the ball within the key.
Students enjoyed and participated celebratory cheers throughout the game, demonstrating their passion both on and off the court.
Baker (’26) wasn’t the only teammate who demonstrated extreme dedication. Jayden Berumen (’29) after working hard to get a shot up, is seen celebrating his contribution to the team and their score.

Unified games are sometimes less attended than varsity games; however, being able to experience the community, care, and effort that is in their games is absolutely unmatched.
