There was a new change of scenery this season as the Lady Maverick wrestling team had a new coach. They also lost their only state placer last year because she transferred to a new school. Though this changed the dynamic on the team, along with the presence of a new coaching staff, the girls were able to pull through and make this season memorable.
Their regional tournament was at Poudre as they looked to advance to state. Lily Hart (‘27) wrestling at 100 pounds placed fifth at regionals to wrap up her junior year.
Morgan McDonald (‘26) missed the postseason last year due to an injury, but was able to come back even stronger this year to place second at regionals. She mentioned that the new coach blended well with the girls and was able to meet each athlete where they were at in experience and goals.
“Coach did a really good job at coming into a program that was very different from what he’s experienced. He kinda told me the second week, he was like ‘Yeah i think you could be a state champ’” said McDonald.
Grace Sierra (‘28) qualified for the state tournament as a freshman last season. This year, she would return after placing third at the regional tournament. Reflecting on this season, Grace commends the new coaches and their ability to adjust to coaching girls—as they came from coaching primarily boys—and how this year’s team has shifted for the better. “The season was honestly just great overall; they helped a lot of girls improve on the mat and in their heads.”
Brianna Bohannon (‘27) would place fourth at regionals to qualify for the first time. Harlow Schaaf (‘28), in her second year of wrestling, placed sixth at regionals in the 140-pound bracket.
Makayla Martinez (‘28) placed fifth at regionals in the 145-pound bracket. As well as Valeria Crespo Barron (‘26), who ended her wrestling career placing fifth at 155 pounds.
Addison Wolver (‘26) also ended her wrestling career by placing fifth. She wrestled 170 pounds.
Tamar Granados (‘26), also in her senior year, placed fifth at 235 pounds.
McDonald’s return to the state tournament was off to a hot start. She won her first three matches to make it to the finals. She would wrestle the tenth ranked wrestler in the country and fall in the finals to place second at 115 pounds after an injury ended her season last year.
Sierra’s experience from last season showed this time at state as she would wrestle multiple consolation matches to finish sixth as a sophomore at 130 pounds.
Bohannon would make her debut at state, but would lose both of her matches. Her experience from this year will set her up well for next season.
The Lady Mavericks finished the season with two state placers. They finished 24th at the state tournament and fifth at regionals.
