Mead’s orchestra program should be more widely appreciated by student body (Opinion)

Students put tremendous effort into this program, and that should be recognized; the first step in remedying this situation is attending your first concert

Ms. Young is Mead High School’s orchestra teacher.

Mead High School’s orchestra program has many highly talented students. The school, as a whole, needs to show more support and appreciation for these students, as they work tirelessly to create music. Simply showing our support by going to more of their concerts can make a huge difference.

The orchestra program has about 40 students. These students put in months of work both during class and outside of class to be able to create the music they are assigned. Along with the students, Ms. Young, the teacher and conductor for the orchestra program, puts a good deal of effort into helping the students grow in their musical abilities, as well as planning for all the concerts, events, and field trips.

Because of how much work the students and Ms. Young put in, our school community should show more support and appreciation for them. More announcements and updates should be given about the orchestra, similar to how our school shows support for our sports teams. These updates will help encourage more students to want to join the orchestra program and go to more concerts. This will help the orchestra students feel more seen and appreciated for all the hard work they put in.

The MHS orchestra has won many awards as a result of their work and talent. For example, they visit the Elitches Festival, and they have received a superior ranking every year they have attended. This should be recognized, and we, as a student body, should celebrate their incredible achievements.

The fact that I was unaware of how strong our orchestra program is is disappointing. Our school should have pride, stand with the orchestra, and support them, which does not seem to be the current state.

I have had the opportunity to attend the last two orchestra concerts. I was so impressed and shocked by how well they played as a group. I was unaware of the hidden talent the orchestra students at my school hold. The only reason I attended at first was because my best friend plays the violin, which I am thankful for.

Everyone should at least try to go to one concert—or more—to support this program. More support should be given to these students. If you can show up for sports games, you can show up for an orchestra concert.
