The cross-town rivals faced off in another anticipated matchup in the second game of the Mead Mavericks’ young season. Frederick’s Golden Eagles were coming off a loss to last year’s 4A state champion the Broomfield Eagles. The Mavericks were looking to win back-to-back games in the rivalry, while the Golden Eagles were looking to avenge their loss a year ago.
The Mavericks received the opening kickoff, and the offense took the field. A sack on first down would hinder the drive and lead to a three-and-out.
The Golden Eagles’ offense would not do much better as they were forced to punt after picking up one first down.
The offenses continued to struggle to put a drive together, as both teams were unable to score after the first quarter. The defenses were off to a hot start and looked to continue their dominance in the second quarter.
On the first play of the quarter, the snap was fumbled, and Owen Noe (‘26) recovered the fumble to give the Mavericks possession of the football. The Mavericks’ offense would go on to run the ball down to the Golden Eagles’ 28-yard line. On 2nd down, Ethan Elmore (‘27) would connect with Eli Davis (‘26) for a 28-yard touchdown. This was the third time their connection has reached the end zone in the early season.
On the following possession, Caleb Fahlin (‘28) made multiple crucial tackles to force the Golden Eagles to 4th and 17. The Mavericks’ defense was holding strong against a running team after playing a pass-heavy team the week before.
The Mavericks’ offense would later take over and look to score with little time remaining. The offense was going to have to drive 60 yards to score a touchdown before the half. Noah Chapala (‘27) would get the drive started after a 19-yard run. The offense was forced to a third and short with little time remaining. Elmore would connect with Ryan St. Aubin (‘26) on a wide-open wheel route for 32 yards to put the Mavericks up 13-0. Davis would add the extra point, and the Mavericks took a 14-0 lead.
However, the Golden Eagles were not content with their deficit. On the first play of their drive, Sonny Delpizzo (‘26) received a lateral on the hook and ladder and took it 50 yards to the opposite 25-yard line. They would settle for a field goal to end the half, but the field goal was wide right. The Mavericks would go into halftime up 14-0.
Frederick received the second-half kickoff, and the Mead defense would take the field again. The defense caused havoc once again and forced a three-and-out to start the half. Halftime would not slow down their dominance.
The Mead offense had started to drive against the Frederick defense to end the second half and returned to the field to do exactly that. The offense would go on a nine-play, 63-yard drive which finished with a Chapala 20-yard touchdown run.
Both teams would force three-and-outs on their next defensive possessions. On the Maverick punt, Delpizzo would take his return 45 yards to the Mavericks’ 40-yard line.
The Golden Eagles’ offense would pick up one first down before the snap was bobbled and recovered by Josh Gonsalves (‘26) to get the offense back on the field again.
The Mavericks’ drive would continue into the fourth quarter as they now led 21-0. The offense drove down to the goal line, but was forced to kick a field goal. But, before the ball was snapped a Frederick defender jumped offside and moved the ball closer to the goal line. Chapala would get the handoff at the two-yard line and score. The extra point by Davis was good and the Mavericks took a commanding 28-0 lead.
The Frederick offense took over, looking to avoid the shutout. The offense was starting to get a drive going after Preston Kissinger (‘26) connected with Delpizzo for a 22-yard gain. The offense would continue to pick up yardage but was forced to 4th and goal from the three-yard line. Gonsalves would stuff the run, and the Mavericks would force another shutout.
The final score would end 28-0, with the Mavericks winning their second game of the year. Noah Chapala led the offense with 124 yards rushing with two scores. Josh Gonsalves led the defense with 15 tackles. Carter Woods (‘26) would not be far behind with 13 on the night. Fahlin finished with four tackles for a loss, and Davis continued his perfect kicking season.
