The Mead Mavericks traveled to Greeley to face the Greeley Central Wildcats in a windy matchup. Gusts were up to 45 miles per hour at kickoff. However, the wind was unable to alter the Mavericks’ path to victory, as the defense earned a shutout, and the offense rushed for 316 yards. It is the first time in ten years that the Mavericks’ defense has had three shutouts. The complementary play of the offense and defense led to a 58-0 victory.
The offense went to work as soon as they touched the ball. On the second play of the game, Noach Chapala (‘27) had a 68-yard touchdown run. He was able to break two tackles on his longest run of the season.
The first drive for Central was much different than the Mavs’. They bobbled the snap on fourth down and were brought down at the 29-yard line. The offense would only need two plays after a Chapala rush led to an Isaac Sword (‘26) touchdown run.
Another defensive stand would set up a 32-yard reception for Griffin Kratochvil (‘26) from Joe Klatt (‘28). Chapala would then rush for his second touchdown of the day.
A few possessions later, the defense would force another punt. This punt was blocked by Caleb Fahlin (‘28), and he returned it for a touchdown. Making it back-to-back games with a defensive touchdown. The last time the defense scored a touchdown before the previous two weeks was two years ago in the playoff game against Durango. The next defensive possession ended with another blocked punt. This time by Keegan Hamaker (‘28). He returned his blocked punt to the three-yard line.
Cooper Modrzejewski (‘28) would easily score as the game would approach the fourth quarter. The defense no longer had its starters in, but that didn’t matter. They forced a turnover on downs, and the offense was still hungry.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Klatt connected with Brennan Stapp (‘28) for a 31-yard play. A few plays later, the Klatt to Stapp connection ended with a five-yard touchdown.
The last defensive possession ended in a turnover. The fumble was recovered by Ben Boatman (‘29) to seal the game, 58-0.
